Tomando como base o problema da labilidade conceitual do termo “fronteira” quando usado como instrumento de estudos da literatura, abordaremos dois aspectos relativos ao tema: 1) a abrangência do conceito, que torna frágil uma aplicação que seja ao mesmo tempo variável e coerente, de um lado, e de outro, consistente e produtiva em termos críticos; 2) a possibilidade de estudos de fronteiras literárias que levem em conta: a) a simbologia topológica e política que emana do termo original; b) os sentidos transpostos metaforicamente, dessa simbologia, para a análise e interpretação de textos de ficção e de poesia; c) os territórios de experimentação de linguagens em que as “fronteiras” parecem dissipar-se em zonas comuns de criação artística ou em zonas de litígio de expressão. O primeiro aspecto permite buscar a origem ou as origens (causas), provavelmente histórica(s) ou política(s), da introdução do termo no domínio da investigação sobre literatura e, consequentemente, permite refletir sobre a existência de outras nomenclaturas que, de modo mais específico, já cobrem o que uma linha de pesquisa das fronteiras pretende cobrir de maneira mais eficiente. Essas reflexões levam a discutir, sem resolver, dois assuntos: o do surgimento e ressurgimento sucessivo de terminologias literárias e o da sua legitimação teórica e crítica. O segundo aspecto faz minha atenção voltar-se: a) para as relações entre literaturas de fronteira de países fronteiriços, para os textos paradialetais ou multilinguísticos ou multiculturais; b) para as relações instauradas entre literatura e as ciências, não só humanas como no caso da relação entre ficção e história, mas também as outras (como no caso da Física e da Matemática); c) para as relações que se estabelecem entre a literatura e as outras artes, a linguagem da literatura e outras linguagens, inclusive as que se depreendem do uso dos meios de comunicação de massa. Ilustraremos a nossa exposição com o comentário de alguns textos considerados “canônicos” e de alguns outros textos que se poderiam classificar como ... de fronteiras.

Given the conceptual problem that the lability of the term "borderline" creates when used in the study of literature, we aim to address two aspects related to this theme: 1) the scope of the concept, which renders fragile any application that is variable and consistent, on the one side, whilst critically consistent and productive on the other; 2) the possibility of border literary studies that consider: a) the topological and political symbolism emanating from the original term; b) the metaphorically transposed connotations of this symbology for the analysis and interpretation of fictional and poetical texts; c) the fields of experimentation with language in which the "borders" seem to dissipate into communal zones of artistic creation or areas of litigious expression. The first aspect permits the investigation of the origin or origins (causes), probably historical or political, of the introduction of the term in the realm of literary studies and leaves one to wonder whether a terminology capable to encapsulate the scope of the borderline studies more efficiently would not exist already. These reflections address two issues without settling them. The first is the emergence and resurgence of successive literary terminology and its validation and theoretical critique. The second draws our attention: a) to the relations between the borderline literature of neighboring countries, para-dialectical, multilingual and multicultural texts; b) to the relations between literature and the sciences, not only the humanities, as in the relationship between fiction and history, but also others such as it happens with physics and mathematics; c) to the relations between literature and the other arts, the literary language and other languages, including those from the means of mass communication. To illustrate this exposure we will review texts deemed “canonical” along with others that could be said to be... in the borderlines.
