A melancolia pode ser considerada o mal da pós-modernidade, por isso ganha bastante espaço entre os conflitos do final do século XX e início do XXI, no Brasil temos o romance A hora da estrela (1977), de Clarice Lispector, como um dos primeiros textos a tomar o conflito do desalento urbano como representação do estado melancólico que toma conta da América Latina, motivado pela instalação de diversos regimes ditatoriais. A personagem Macabéa expressa em sua composição psíquica o desalento melancólico. Neste ensaio, apontamos como a melancolia no romance salienta as tensões presentes na sociedade pós-moderna, que no Brasil toma o discurso da sobrevivência e da de-sobrevivência por conta da condição subdesenvolvida demarcada pela impossibilidade da revolução das minorias, gerando o sentimento de derrota do povo brasileiro. O caráter melancólico, observado em Macabéa, espelha a melancolia atribuída ao narrador Rodrigo S. M., como forma de resignificação do desalento.

Melancholy can be considered the evil of postmodernity, therefore it gets plenty of room between the conflicts in the end of 20th century and the early 21st. In Brazil we have the novel The Hour of the Star (1977), Clarice Lispector, as one of the first works to take the urban despair conflict as a representation of the melancholic state that takes over all Latin America driven by the settlement of various dictatorial systems. The character Macabéa permits the reader to see in her psychic constitution a melancholic gloom. In this paper, it is showed how the novel melancholy emphasizes the current tensions in the post-modern society, which, in Brazil, gathers the survival and non-survival discourses due to the underdeveloped condition marked by the incapability of revolution by the minorities, leading to the defeat the Brazilian people. The melancholic tone displayed in Macabéa reflects the melancholy attributed to the narrator Rodrigo SM, as a way of giving another meaning to gloom.
