RESUMEN: El otro (1910) de Eduardo Zamacois, novela con más fortuna editorial que crítica y que incluso fue llevada al cine, es una buena muestra de toda una serie de preocupaciones y temas recurrentes del modernismo: el ocultismo, el erotismo, el más allá, la muerte, el mal, el terror, la locura, la violencia, el satanismo, el crimen, la impotencia masculina o la sexualidad femenina. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar cómo operan estos elementos en el relato y su relación con lo fantástico para ahondar en la atracción que lo oculto ejerció en la narrativa de una época desencantada.

ABSTRACT: El otro (1910), by Eduardo Zamacois, was a popular novel with its readers but was not as well received by the critics. This novel was also adapted into a film. The story shows series of concerns and recurring themes in modernism: the occult, the eroticism, the afterlife, death, evil, horror, madness, violence, Satanism, crime, male impotence, or female sexuality. The aim of this article is to analyze how these elements operate within the story and its relationship to fantasy and delve into the attraction of the unseen expressed in the narrative of a disenchanted time.
