RESUMO: No conto “Uns braços”, assim como em outras obras de Machado de Assis, é possível identificar a dinâmica das relações entre as classes sociais e principalmente entre os gêneros do Brasil oitocentista. Elementos fundamentais no estabelecimento dos códigos sociais de conduta da época, como o interesse, o favor, a bajulação e o despistamento, aparecem dissecados de forma crítica e até mesmo irônica na narrativa. O objetivo deste trabalho é examinar as assimetrias e simetrias entre homens e mulheres delineadas nesse conto pelo posicionamento e movimentação das personagens de acordo com esses elementos.

ABSTRACT: In the short story “Uns braços”, as well as in other works by Machado de Assis, it is possible to identify the dynamics of the relationships between social classes and especially genders in nineteenth-century Brazil. Key elements in the establishment of social codes of conduct at the time, such as interest, favor, flattery and cheating, are critically and even ironically dissected in the narrative. The aim of this paper is to examine the asymmetries and symmetries between men and women outlined in that short story by the characters’ positioning and movement according to those elements.
