Este trabalho, embasado pela teoria da Intertextualidade, apresenta um estudo comparativo de como Chaucer se apropriou da literatura italiana e trouxe uma roupagem ao leitor de sua época e a nós, de forma contemporânea. Como Chaucer estava em missão na Europa, era inevitável o contato com a literatura que florescia na Itália, e ao ler o Decamerão e a Divina comédia, o literato inglês soube trazer, de modo dialógico com a literatura italiana, o universo que se encontrava à sua volta. Como sua contística estava retratando a realidade dominante das classes superiores, como a Igreja e a aristocracia, por meio da sátira, Os contos da Cantuária têm como elemento enriquecedor a metanarrativa, ou seja, os peregrinos concorrem entre si para contar a melhor história, fazendo algumas intervenções, onde o literato e também os italianos propõem uma dialética em questões delicadas como as relações sociais, especificamente de gênero, e outras nem tanto convencionais em relação à mentalidade moralizante da época.

This work, based on the theory of intertextuality, presents a comparative study of how Chaucer appropriated the Italian literature and brought a new clothing to the reader of his time and to us, in a contemporary way. As Chaucer was on a mission in Europe, the contact with the literature that flourished in Italy was inevitable, and after he read Decameron and the Divine Comedy, the English writer was able to bring, in a dialogical way with Italian literature, the universe that he was surrounded by. As his tales portraits the dominant reality of the upper classes, like the church and the aristocracy, through the satire, The Canterbury Tales have as an enriching element the metanarrative, that is, the pilgrims compete with each other to tell the best story, making some interventions, where the writer and also the Italians propose a dialectic on sensitive issues such as social relations, specifically gender, and others not so conventional in relation to the moralizing mentality of the time.
