O objetivo deste escrito é apresentar e discutir uma estratégia de leitura sobre o romance O Cortiço (1890), de Aluísio Azevedo. O ensaio debruça-se em passagens do romance para estabelecer uma crítica sobre o narrador e as contradições em torno da “denúncia do regime escravocrata” supostamente enunciado pela obra, a partir do que se poderia chamar de “abolicionismo racista”.

The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss a reading strategy on the novel O Cortiço (1890), by Aluísio Azevedo. The essay focuses on passages in the novel to establish a critique of the narrator and the contradictions surrounding the “denunciation of the slave regime” supposedly enunciated by the book, based on what could be called “racist abolitionism”.
