RESUMO: Théophile Gautier dedicou o início de sua carreira literária ao fantástico, período no qual se insere “La Morte Amoureuse” (1881), conto que pretendemos analisar ao longo deste artigo. Tomamos como ponto de partida a fragmentação do protagonista, Romuald, cuja representação se dá pelo antagonismo entre Clarimonde e Sérapion. Sob a perspectiva foucaultiana de sexualidade constituída por discursos reguladores e o conceito de Unheimliche (estranho-familiar) proposto por Freud, pretendemos analisar a ideia do duplo esboçada na constituição do personagem principal e dos conflitos que enfrenta ao longo da narrativa ao deparar com um mundo para além das portas da igreja.

ABSTRACT: In this essay, we analyze the short story “La Morte Amoureuse” (1881), a short-story staged in the backdrop of Théophile Gautier’s dedication to the representation of the fantastic in the early phase of his literary career. In the text, the fragmentation of the protagonist, Romuald, is drawn through the antagonism between Clarimonde and Sérapion. Through the Foucaultian idea of sexuality constituted by regulatory discourses and the Freudian concept of Unheimliche (the uncanny), we broach how the double outlined in the constitution of the main character and his conflicts throughout a fictional world beyond the church enclave.
