RESUMO: Com a passagem para a modernidade e suas novas formas de governo, o exercício do poder muda. Conforme indicado por Foucault (2014a), o poder passa a ser exercido de maneira mais difusa e há uma preocupação e um controle maior sobre os corpos; a dimensão biológica é fortalecida. Concomitantemente, também surgiam as teorias racistas modernas. O Brasil vivia a Primeira República, e a elite buscava conduzir um processo modernizador transplantando ideias europeias. Porém, as ideias racistas inviabilizariam a modernização desejada. Como solução, recorre-se ao higienismo. Este artigo pretende identificar as práticas higienistas através das crônicas de Lima Barreto e demonstrar como essas práticas foram aplicadas e quais setores da população foram mais afetados.

 ABSTRACT: With the advent of modernity and its new forms of government, the exercise of power has changed. As stated by Foucault (2014a), power starts to be used more diffusely and there is greater concern and control of bodies; the biological dimension is strengthened. At the same time, the modern racial theories emerged. Brazil was in the First Brazilian Republic, and the elite was trying to import European ideas to modernise the country. However, those racist ideas would make modernization impossible. To sort that out, the elite resorts to hygienism. This article intends to identify the hygienist practises through Lima Barreto´s chronicles and show how these practises were applied and which sections of the population were mostly affected.
