ABSTRACT: This article seeks to analyse the novel A Ilustre Casa de Ramires (1900), by 19th Century Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós, with an emphasis on his representation of the social role of the writer. With the support of the ideas by theorists like Luiz Costa Lima (2007) and Fredric Jameson (1981, 1985), we intend to look into how Eça establishes links between the writer and power, the writer and ideology and finally — more broadly — the writer and politics.
