ABSTRACT: As an important translator of French, Sérgio Milliet (1898-1966) translated into Portuguese works by Pascal, Laclos, Gide, Sartre and Beauvoir, as well as several travelers’ accounts and Montaigne’s Essays. Less renowned are his translations into French published in European periodicals in the 1920s, whose goal was to spread modern Brazilian literature in the Old Continent. Among these translations, four of Guilherme de Almeida’s poems stand out – “Aos pés da cruz” (“Au pied de la croix”), “A cadeia de cristal” (“La chaîne de cristal”), “A dança das horas” (“La danse des heures”) and the sonnet XVI in Nós (“Nous”) – published in the Belgian magazine Lumière in 1921 and 1922. The purpose of this article is to present these translations and, based onthem, understand what Sérgio Milliet’s translation project might have been.
