Ecos de leituras: do esquecido Adherbal de Carvalho, A Noiva
Resumo
RESUMO: O Naturalismo tal como era praticado na França despertou o interesse de grande número de seguidores no Brasil. Este fato parece ter ocorrido porque, por um lado, o espírito romântico, entre nós associado ao próprio regime monárquico, parecia ver esgotadas suas fontes de inspiração; por outro, o “moderno” espírito científico, associado ao pensamento republicano foi,aos poucos, impulsionando a produção artística de modo geral, e particularmente, a literária, para outra direção: era essencial a observação rigorosa dos fatos, a apresentação da “verdade”. Dentre os autores brasileiros que buscaram seguir a nova tendência divulgada por Zola e seu romanceexperimental, muitos foram relegados ao esquecimento. É o caso, por exemplo, de Adherbal de Carvalho que, além de estudos críticos, poesias e traduções publicou, em 1888, em São Paulo, A Noiva – escorço de um romance naturalista - seu único texto de ficção em prosa. Pouquíssimo se fala, em nossos dias, sobre esse romance e dele sobrevivem apenas raros exemplares. O objetivo dotrabalho aqui apresentado é o de resgatar o texto de Carvalho e de nele situar ecos do naturalismo tal como o praticava Zola, bem como o de resgatar memórias da leitura de obras de outros autores como Flaubert e Dumas.
ABSTRACT: Naturalism, as it was practiced in France, aroused the interest of a great number of followers in Brazil. This fact seems to have occurred because, on the one hand, the romantic spirit, associated in Brazil to the monarchic regime itself, seemed to have its sources of inspiration exhausted; on the other hand, the “modern” scientific spirit, associated to the republican thought,was gradually pushing the artistic production in general, and particularly the literary one, in another direction: the rigorous observation of facts, the presentation of the “truth” was essential. Among the Brazilian authors who tried to follow the new trend disseminated by Zola and his experimental novel, many were relegated to oblivion. This is the case, for example, of Adherbal de Carvalho who, besides critical studies, poetry and translations published, in 1888, in São Paulo, The Bride (A Noiva) - sketch of a naturalistic novel - his only prose fiction. Very little is said, nowadays, about this novel and only rare copies of it still survive. The purpose of the work presented here is to recover Carvalho’s text and to locate in it echoes of naturalism as practiced by Zola, as well as to recover reading memories of the works of other authors such as Flaubert and Dumas.
